OPINION: More Gun Control Isn't Going to Fix Our Problems
An emotionally satisfying, yet ultimately futile approach to America's gun violence problem.
A recent slew of mass shootings has left Americans across the country shocked and desperately searching for answers. Consequently, there is a renewed demand for action, typically in the form of more gun control. Universal background checks, rifle bans, and magazine bans are among some of the most popular policy prescriptions that we see from gun control advocates. While these proposals sound effective, in reality, they won’t do much.
Legal guns will still be bought directly by future mass shooters. The Uvalde, Texas shooter, for example, passed a background check to obtain his weaponry. That being said, even if criminals can’t buy guns legally, they can still find other ways to get their hands on them.
Unsurprisingly, criminals don’t really care about following laws. They could recruit someone else to buy guns for them via straw purchases or even 3D print them at home. Somehow, in the strictest parts of the least gun-friendly states of California and New York, we still find stories such as these:
Even if we could somehow remove every gun in the country, those with violent evil in their hearts have plenty of other ways to carry out their vile agendas. America has a cultural problem, not a gun problem. That topic will be addressed in greater detail in a later article and/or video. Thanks for reading.
