World Swimming's FINA Bans Transgender Athletes From Women's Events
Athletes like trans swimmer Lia Thomas will be barred from participating under the new rules starting Monday.
FINA, the world swimming’s governing body, has just announced a new policy change. Under it, only swimmers who transitioned before age 12 will be allowed to compete in women’s events. Transgender athletes will instead be allowed to compete in a new open competition category to be opened later. FINA members approved the policy with 71.5% in favor. The policy will take effect tomorrow, Monday the 20th.
